• Raising awareness on World Wetlands Day

Beginning of February marks a significant event in the history of nature conservation. It is World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated on 2 February, marking the adoption of Ramsar Wetlands Convention in 1971 in the Iranian city Ramsar.

The Convention is the only international environmental agreement which deals with a particular ecosystem, and it aims to foster wetland protection. Latvia joined the Ramsar Convention in 1995.

To raise awareness on these issues, a video shooting was carried out by a national television in one of our pilot areas, Great Ķemeri bog, on 6th of February. Wetlands expert of LIFE REstore, Māra Pakalne, performed an interview, explaining about the importance of wetlands in greenhouse gas emission measurements and the contribution of LIFE REstore in the inventory of degraded peatlands in Latvia.
